also . sorry for being the token skyward sword fan but can i just gush for a moment about link’s expressiveness ? don’t get me wrong , i adore the depth of character and tragic story being portrayed by botw/totk’s stoic, silent link, a splendid display of the crushing weight of responsibility and expectations of the Chosen Hero, but goddamn can we let this kid smile ? please ? SkSw link smiles . he laughs . but beyond that, he cries . he runs up to zelda and bangs his fists on the amber, knowing that won’t get her out but praying to the stars that maybe it will. he dejectedly walks out of the chamber with his head hanging low.

the modern, open world zelda games are very good at showing character in much deeper ways, harder to notice but impossible to ignore once you understand them .

but sometimes a diary entry in the ruins of zelda’s study, while touching, isn’t enough of a gut punch . it’s enough to make you sad, make you pause and think about what you’ve learned.

but SkSw forces you to watch as a less-than-admired kid from the academy learns that his life is written out for him, and he isn’t supposed to be happy. botw/totk already knows this, and has internalized it. but poor SkSw has to find out the hard way that his life is a tragedy. and he’s not going to repress himself, so you don’t get to ignore him either.
